LANSING, Mich., Oct. 12, 2021 – Former President Donald J. Trump called on his supporters to attend a rally on the steps of the Michigan Capitol today. The “Big Michigan Rally” was aimed at overturning the results of the 2020 presidential election and spreading disinformation that furthers the Big Lie. Attendees screamed insults at House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township) as she entered her office in the Capitol, who issued the following statement:
“Today, we heard state elected officials wearing QAnon insignias spew the same kind of inflammatory rhetoric that brought men armed with assault rifles to these very steps last year. We heard calls for election security and accountability from the very people who tried to overturn a free and fair election by fueling violence and bringing fake electors to the doors of our Capitol. If we’re looking for accountability, we must start with them. The behavior we saw today is not just embarrassing for our state, it’s downright dangerous. Efforts like this to undermine faith in our democracy are no longer just about overturning the 2020 election, they’re about eroding trust and laying the groundwork to overturn the next election. While these extremists are stuck in the past reliving Trump’s loss, Democrats are looking to the future and focused on beating back COVID-19 and bringing billions in relief funding home from D.C. to deliver support for working families.”
