DETROIT — State Representatives Harvey Santana (D-Detroit) and Ken Yonker (R-Caledonia), announced today they have agreed to shed traditionally partisan views and join forces to create state legislation that would address student safety in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. tragedy.
“The nation is mourning and looking for answers in the aftermath of such a horrific event,” Santana said. “This is not a time to start having a political discussion about gun control or arming teachers with guns as a way to prevent attacks on children from happening.” This is an opportunity for more meaningful action.”
Yonker said: “As a father and elected official I want to help lead the discussion on what we can do to protect Michigan children. That is the main point and we should not allow politics to take over and the special interests to divide the conversation into what teachers don’t want and what is best only for Second Amendment advocates.”
Both representatives have agreed to have several meetings and exchange ideas on legislative action they want to introduce jointly in the upcoming legislative session beginning in January. They say they also plan to keep the governor’s office posted on their progress.
