Honorable Members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation

First St Southeast

Washington, DC 20004

To the Honorable Members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation:

We, the undersigned, urge all 15 Members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation to demand that

Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune hold an immediate vote to require the United States Justice Department to release all files related to Jeffrey Epstein. Once this issue reaches both the U.S. House and Senate floor, we expect that all Members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation will vote yes on a resolution that demands the release of all unredacted files concerning Jeffrey Epstein.

According to a February press release on the United States Department of Justice’s website, “Attorney General Bondi requested the full and complete files related to Jeffrey Epstein. In response, the Department received approximately 200 pages of documents, however, the Attorney General was later informed of thousands of pages of documents related to the investigation and indictment of Epstein that were not previously disclosed”.

Several months after receiving thousands of requested files from the FBI, the Department of Justice and the FBI announced in a memo that in their systemic review, they found no evidence that the convicted sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein blackmailed powerful figures, kept a “client list” or was murdered.

Similarly to the vast majority of the American public, we, the undersigned find the results of this systemic review to be deeply troubling. As Attorney General Bondi mentioned in her February press release, at least 250 underage girls were victims of sexual exploitation at the hands of Epstein. Of the at least 250 victims, we know through public testimony, depositions, and affidavits, that numerous victims have previously stated that they were sexually assaulted as a minor by Epstein along with other rich men.

When considering the staggering number of victims, along with Epstein and his former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell’s international links to some of the world’s richest, most powerful people, it is imperative that the Epstein files are made public to ensure that we are holding anyone involved in such atrocities responsible.

Here in Michigan, the House of Representatives of the 103rd Legislature have made the fight against corruption a focal point. Throughout the budget process, in numerous committee hearings, and by way of several pieces of legislation, this chamber has sought the highest standards of ethics, accountability, and transparency.

In addition to our Chamber’s efforts to promote the highest levels of ethics, accountability, and transparency, this issue is also one that is personal to many here in Michigan. That is because Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell had direct ties to a teen summer camp here in our state. According to testimony from Ghislaine Maxwell’s 2021 trial, Epstein paid for the construction of a “Jeffrey Epstein Scholarship Lodge” as it was formerly known, at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Traverse City, Michigan. The lodge was notably located near where junior girls lived at the camp, and tragically, a 15 year-old girl was groomed by Epstein during one of his overnight visits to the camp, and subsequently raped and sex trafficked for several years by Epstein himself.

In order to pursue justice for all of the known and potentially unknown victims of Jeffrey Epstein’s heinous assaults here in Michigan, and in accordance with this Chamber’s efforts for a more transparent government, we are asking each of you to use your voice as a Member of Congress to call for the release of all files that the DOJ, FBI, or any other government entity has on Jeffrey Epstein.

The overwhelmingly bipartisan support for this issue continues to grow, as a recent poll conducted by the Washington Post found that 83% of republicans and 90% of democrats believe that the Epstein files should be released. In light of the unprecedented levels of public support for the release of the Epstein files, a U.S. House Oversight subcommittee voted in favor of subpoenaing the Department of Justice for files and information related to Jeffrey Epstein just a few weeks back. Now, that subcommittee has formally issued a subpoena to the Justice Department, calling for it to provide any files in its possession relating to Jeffrey Epstein.

While we thoroughly appreciate all the hard work and man hours that went into the DOJ and FBI’s review of the Epstein files, the public and unredacted release of all known files relating to Jeffrey Epstein is vital to preserve the faith that Americans have in our judicial system and in our ability to govern effectively. In releasing the files, the hope is that it will show that the findings from the DOJ and FBI’s internal review are consistent with the documents that were subject to said review.

As the Congressional Representation for Michigan, we are hopeful that each of you will relentlessly pursue justice for the hundreds of known and unknown victims of Epstein’s terror. In the coming weeks, it is of the utmost importance that Congress exercises its Constitutional authority to conduct oversight and to seek justice for the people that you are sworn to protect.

Thank you for your attention and commitment to democratic, transparent, and responsive governance.

Sincerely,
