LANSING, Mich., Jan 8, 2025 — The Michigan House of Representatives kicked off the 103rd Legislative term today. Four new Democratic members attended their first session day at the Capitol. One of those members, state Rep. Dr. Matt Longjohn (D-Portage), became the only physician serving the state Legislature. After the first session, Longjohn issued the following statement:
“As I work as a state representative, I will uphold my community’s values and my values as a physician. I’ve taken several oaths in my life, from the Hippocratic Oath to now the Oath of Office to become a public servant to my community. During my time, I will do no harm and will uphold the U.S. and State Constitutions. One of my top priorities is to improve the health and quality of life for Michiganders. In doing so, I will focus on reducing health care costs, increasing health care quality and access and stabilizing and diversifying the health care workforce. I’m ready to not just advocate for a better Michigan, but make it happen.”
