REDFORD — State Rep. Leslie Love (D-Detroit) announced she is holding a Youth Forum on Monday, May 14, from 4-5:30 p.m. at Redford Community Center, 12121 Hemingway. Her special guest will be state Rep. Jewell Jones (D-Inkster), who at age 21 became the youngest member ever elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. The forum will feature young adult-focused discussions and presentations on current issues and civic engagement.
“Recently we’ve been attuned as a society to the voices of young people given the courage many have expressed in speaking out against gun violence,” Love said. “But there are so many other issues facing them as well that deserve our attention, and deserve a voice be given to them, “They will inherit this earth from us, and they should have a say in how to maintain and fix it.”
The forum came about after Rep. Love conducted sessions on civil rights and civic engagement at Redford Union High School and Henry Ford High School, and spoke at a voter registration drive at Thurston High School earlier this year.
“It was interesting to hear from students, and the activism spurred on by the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida is something not seen in at least a generation,” Love said. “I hope this starts a continuing dialogue with young people.”
