LANSING, Mich., Jan. 23, 2025 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed two bills into law yesterday that help support public safety by promoting educational resources in our schools on how to safely store firearms, keeping them out of the wrong hands and preventing gun violence.

House Bill 5450, sponsored by state Rep. Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy), requires Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services to develop information and resources regarding the safe storage of firearms for schools to distribute.

“Education is a powerful tool in preventing gun violence,” MacDonell said. “Ensuring Michigan families have access to and understand the legal requirements for storing firearms safely is essential in combating the gun violence epidemic in our state. These resources can save lives — we must keep people informed and keep our communities safe. I’m thrilled to see these bills become law today.”

House Bill 5451, sponsored by state Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Meridian Township), requires school districts to provide that information to parents and legal guardians.

“There is no denying that gun violence is a serious problem across our state and country,” Brixie said. “That’s why we are taking action to make sure firearm owners know how to safely store their firearms, keeping them out of the hands of children and others who should not have access. These new laws will help keep our communities safer through education and a better understanding of the law.”
