LANSING — Last night, former Congressman John Dingell passed away at the age of 92. Congressman Dingell began his political career in 1955 and earned the distinction of being the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history, representing Michigan’s southeast communities for more than 59 years before retiring in 2015. In response to his passing, state Rep. Mari Manoogian (D-Birmingham) issued the following statement:

“Even though I am just one of many who had the privilege of interning in his office over the course of his career, Congressman Dingell always made sure to remind us that the work we did — the people’s work — mattered. The sheer number of Team Dingell alumni who answered the call to service is a testament to the values and love of country he instilled in each of us. Words cannot express my gratitude for my first boss in public service; I miss him already. My thoughts are with Congresswoman Debbie Dingell and the entire Dingell family during this difficult time."
