LANSING, Mich., July 7, 2025 — After an eight-hour session, Matt Hall and Michigan House Republicans failed to negotiate a state budget or produce a finalized bill for review ahead of the July 1 statutory deadline. The failure in leadership has especially devastating consequences for Michigan’s schools, who now must plan in the dark for this fiscal year. In response to Hall’s inability to complete his most important job as House Speaker, state Rep. Jasper R. Martus (D-Flushing) issued the following statement:
“Our most important job as lawmakers is to pass a budget that funds our schools and hospitals, roads and bridges — House Republicans have failed. Pure and simple. They refused to negotiate and now we don’t have a budget done on time because they were too busy playing games. This budget process is long from over and I’m fighting for quality education, affordable health care and strong infrastructure.”
