LANSING, Mich., July 22, 2024 — Recent events in Bangladesh have brought to the forefront the urgent need for attention and action regarding the ongoing quota reform movement. The movement, led primarily by students and young activists, seeks to reform the existing quota system in public sector jobs, which many argue is outdated and unfairly biased. The protests, which began peacefully, have unfortunately been met with violence and repression. Following the unrest, state Rep. Donovan McKinney (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:

“I unequivocally condemn the violent attacks against Bangladeshi students as they advocate for a more equitable and fair economic system. I also offer my unwavering support to the Bangladeshi-American community and pray for the countless lives lost.”

“The recent attacks on those advocating for justice and their fundamental rights are deeply troubling and unacceptable. As a representative of a district that is proud to be home of many Bangladeshi community members, I strongly condemn these acts and call for immediate action to protect the lives and rights of all Bangladeshi citizens. The freedom to express oneself and to peacefully assemble are basic human rights that must be safeguarded at all costs. My thoughts and prayers are with the families in our community and beyond who are affected by this tragic violence. I remain committed to advocating for human rights and justice, both here in our district and around the world.”
