LANSING, Mich., Aug. 28, 2025 — This week, House Republicans passed their omnibus budget spending bill. Following D.C. Republicans’ playbook, the House Republican budget cuts necessary programs and services that Michiganders rely on from Medicaid to food assistance to public safety. After voting no on House Bill 4706, state Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mt. Clemens) released the following statement:

“After months of delay and games, Republicans finally unveiled their budget which would cut critical funding across the board, including SNAP benefits, Medicaid and policing. House Republicans are slashing necessary lifelines and protections for our kids, families and communities. I’m here to fund the programs that help Michiganders get ahead, not strip away critical assistance, and I wish my colleagues across the aisle had the same goal.

“For seven months, Republicans refused to negotiate in good faith with House Democrats, and Tuesday was more of the same. I proposed amendments to invest additional funding for public safety and violence prevention and health care, but Republicans rejected them outright on top of massive cuts to the Michigan State police. Their approach to the process and the content of their budget makes one thing clear: it’s the Republicans’ way or the highway, no matter the consequences for Michigan.”
