LANSING, Mich., March 26, 2025 — State Rep. Denise Mentzer (D-Mt. Clemens) introduced House Resolution 51 last week calling on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to immediately release $56 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds allocated to the State of Michigan. This funding, which has remained in limbo following a freeze on federal funding, is vital for supporting disaster relief, emergency response programs and community recovery efforts.

“We are calling on the federal government to do their jobs so Michiganders can do theirs,” Mentzer said. “It is truly indefensible to withhold vital funding to emergency and disaster response teams whose work supports Michiganders who have lost everything. Michiganders will not be collateral damage in the federal government’s chaos — the funds need to be released now.”

Any delays in this funding could cause significant strain on Michigan’s emergency response services, local governments and nonprofit organizations. This could lead to delays in response times and disruptions to disaster recovery efforts.

“This federal freeze is playing with people’s livelihoods and, more importantly, their lives,” Mentzer continued. “Emergency response workers are heroes. Michiganders need security and to know that our response teams are ready to jump into action when necessary. Further delays in this funding are shameful and go against everything we stand for.”
