LANSING, Mich., March 5, 2024 — A distribution plant in state Rep. Denise Mentzer’s (D-Mt. Clemens) House district caught fire last night, causing several explosions. The events unfolded between 15 Mile Road and Groesbeck Highway. As a consequence of the fire and explosion, a 19-year-old man standing nearby was killed, and one firefighter was injured. The firefighter was taken to the hospital and later released with minor injuries. The fire was extinguished early Tuesday morning. With the help of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, investigations at the facility are ongoing. In response to the incident, Mentzer issued the following statement:

“This was a shocking event, as flames, loud explosions and smoke engulfed our community. The debris from the explosions expanded at least a mile around the facility. In efforts to control the situation, our local authorities responded swiftly, and I thank them for their continued efforts in this investigation. My heart goes out to all those impacted and to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life in this unfortunate event. It truly is a tragic loss for our community.”
