LANSING, Mich., April 3, 2024 — A 5-year-old was shot and killed near Newaygo, Mich., this week. Two children were at their grandparents’ home when they found a gun inside a bedroom. The gun was then handled by a 6-year-old when the firearm discharged, killing the 5-year-old. Investigations are ongoing. After the announcement, the Michigan Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Caucus issued the following statement:
“The members of the MFSVP Caucus are heartbroken to learn of yet another preventable death of a child as a result of an unsecured firearm. Guns are dangerous and proper care by owners is essential to ensure the safety of themselves and others in their homes. Michigan’s safe storage laws went into effect in February — laws meant to prevent avoidable tragedies like this. Gun ownership is a responsibility that demands compliance with the law, and we encourage all residents to join with us as partners in ensuring the safety of our communities, our homes and our children.”
