Caucus issued letter to Department of Corrections
LANSING, Mich., Aug. 14, 2025 — The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC) recently sent a letter to the Director of the Michigan Department of Corrections to express their deep concern about the well-documented problems at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility (WHV). In particular, the caucus highlighted the case of Krystal Clark, an incarceree whose urgent health needs they say underscore broader deficiencies in medical responsiveness within the facility. After sending the letter, state Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw), MLBC chair, issued the following statement:
“This case highlights the unacceptable risks posed by delayed care, lack of specialist access and insufficient oversight of medical contractors. No one in state custody should face preventable suffering because of systemic neglect. We are calling for immediate medical intervention to ensure prompt care for Ms. Clark and all others with urgent or chronic needs. We also call for an independent facility audit and environmental remediation to eliminate mold and HVAC deficiencies.
“We further call for improved training programs, increased staffing levels, labor standards reform and transparency and accountability through public quarterly reports. The situation at WHV demands urgent reform to protect the dignity, health and lives of those in its care, and we stand ready to work with the Governor’s Office, the Department of Corrections, the Legislative Corrections Ombudsman and advocacy groups to ensure that happens.”
