LANSING, Mich., May 25, 2022 — With the looming threat of Roe v. Wade being overturned this summer, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that she signed an executive directive instructing State of Michigan departments and agencies to review aspects of reproductive health care and identify and assess potential opportunities to increase protections for reproductive health. Michigan’s Progressive Women’s Caucus, comprised of members in the state’s House and Senate, released the following statement in support of Whitmer’s executive directive:

“The Progressive Women’s Caucus supports and applauds Governor Whitmer’s directive to ensure state agencies are protecting access to abortion and other forms of reproductive health care. Every Michigander deserves the right to make decisions about their own body and reproductive futures.”

Michigan is one of 26 states that has an outdated abortion ban in the state’s constitution that would go into effect if Roe is overturned. Luckily, earlier this month Court of Claims Judge Elizabeth Gleicher granted a preliminary injunction that suspends Michigan’s abortion ban while a lawsuit from Planned Parenthood and a separate lawsuit from Whitmer await a hearing. The governor’s executive directive is the latest example of Michigan Democratic leadership fighting to preserve a person’s right to reproductive health care.
