LANSING, Mich., Feb. 7, 2025 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s state budget executive recommendations for the fiscal year 2025-26 state budget were presented yesterday. One of her recommendations was to raise landfill tipping fees in Michigan from 36 cents a ton to $5 per ton. State Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Twp.) previously sponsored legislation to raise the fee in Michigan, but it did not pass both chambers before the legislative term ended. After the committee presentation, Miller issued the following the statement:

“Michigan’s low landfill tipping fees make our state a premier destination to dump waste — a practice that harms our environment and endangers the health and safety of our community. I wholeheartedly support the governor’s recommendation to raise fees, and I am ready to continue my work in the legislature to ensure this gets done. It is far past time that we take action to protect Michiganders and send a loud and clear message that our state is not a dumping ground.”
