LANSING, Mich., Sept. 11, 2024 — State Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Township) held a press conference today on her legislation to block efforts to move radioactive soil and water from New York state to Michigan.

“This legislation will ban radioactive waste dumping in Michigan to protect the health and safety of our residents. Our beautiful state is not a dumping ground. My constituents have told me again and again that they are worried and angry that radioactive materials from three states away are coming to their backyards,” Miller said. “Let’s continue Michigan’s legacy as an environmental steward and protect our farms and lakes from dangerous pollution for generations to come,”

During the “Not Your Dumping Ground: Keeping Michigan Clean & Safe” press conference, she discussed her recently introduced legislation, House Bill 5923, to ban the dumping of radioactive waste in Michigan. The legislation was modeled after a New York state law that enacted a similar ban on radioactive waste.

“Michigan has always been a leader in environmental protection, and we won’t allow our communities to become the dumping ground for radioactive waste. I stand with Rep. Miller in her fight, and I’m committed to ensuring Wayne County remains a safe and healthy place for all of us to live,” said Wayne County Commissioner-elect Allen Wilson.
