LANSING, Mich., May 1, 2025 — State Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Twp.) introduced House Resolution 85 to urge the federal government to pursue policies that support Michigan farmers in response to tariff threats. Michigan’s agriculture industry is vital to the state’s economic success and contributes approximately $104 billion to its economy each year, supporting thousands of jobs and providing fresh food for Americans in Michigan and beyond.

“The agriculture industry is crucial to the success of our state’s economy. It takes dedication, resilience and hard work to run a farm, manage land and contribute to a food system that sustains communities across Michigan and beyond. Additionally, many families rely on our local farmers for the food they need,” Miller said. “That’s why it’s critical we support policies — like my resolution — that protect our farmland, invest in agricultural innovation and ensure the next generation of farmers has the tools and resources they need to succeed. Our future depends on it.”

Michigan has been ground zero for the consequences of these tariffs. In March, China imposed a 15% retaliatory tariff on U.S. agriculture products. Many Michigan farmers have voiced their concerns about their ability to maintain their livelihoods due to the rising costs caused by these tariffs.

“Michiganders have made themselves clear — they need us to lower costs, and these tariffs do the exact opposite. The tariffs affect farmers and agricultural workers on the front end, and consumers are squeezed at the store and farm stands,” Miller said. “Michigan’s agricultural workers and consumers are depending on our federal government to enact fair trade policies that allow our economy to thrive, and it’s time for them to listen.”
