LANSING, Mich., May 22, 2024 — It was recently announced that the first case of influenza A (H5) was detected in a Michigan resident. This is the second case of this strain of influenza found in humans, which generally only infects livestock. In response to the announcement, state Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Township), chair of the House Agriculture Committee, issued the following statement:
“As this situation has played out, I have been keeping a very close eye on developments like this one. Michigan’s agriculture industry, as well as the health and safety of livestock and farmers, is critical to the success of our state. I have been in regular communication with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and I have extended an invitation for them to testify at an upcoming committee hearing. Their expertise and collaboration is vital as we work together to address this issue and put the people of Michigan first.”
