VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., Sept. 19, 2024 — A Wayne County Circuit Court judge has temporarily blocked shipments of radioactive waste from a site in New York to a hazardous waste landfill in Van Buren Township. State Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Township), who has been a champion for residents in their fight against the waste shipments and acted on their behalf by introducing legislation, House Bill 5923, to ban radioactive waste dumping in Michigan, issued the following statement on the ruling:

“I’m pleased to hear about the temporary injunction to block these shipments, but make no mistake — this is one small victory in a much bigger fight, and I will not rest until there is a permanent solution. The people of Wayne County have spoken loud and clear: Our hometown will not be the dumping ground for toxic, radioactive waste, and I stand with them 100%, be they Democrat, Republican or Independent. The battle to keep waste out of our community’s backyard is far from over. My legislation to permanently ban radioactive waste dumping in Michigan is absolutely still crucial in keeping our state safe and clean. Let me be clear — I will not rest until the people’s voice becomes the law of the land.”
