LANSING, Mich., Dec 3, 2024 — State Rep. Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor) issued the following statement condemning hateful rhetoric following a recent viral homophobic tweet from a fellow lawmaker:

“Rep. Schriver’s divisive tweet about marriage equality highlights the key differences between our caucuses. While some are focused on taking away the rights of loving families, we are working hard to support working families. His recent tweet advocating to roll back marriage equality is deeply troubling and fundamentally un-American. Love is love, and every individual deserves the right to marry the person they love without fear of discrimination or political interference.

“In a time when we should be focused on unity and progress, such hateful rhetoric only serves to divide. It shows what we’ve already known — that extreme politicians are coming for our marriages. We will not tolerate attempts to undermine the hard-won rights of our LGBTQ+ community members and will fight to enshrine the right to marriage in our state constitution. To all those who may feel targeted or unsafe by these words: know that I, and so many others, stand with you and will continue to fight for your rights and dignity.”

This is definitely both controversial and extreme, along with anti-family. I grew up believing I'd never be able to get married and I'm not going back." It is in response to Rep. Josh Schriver's tweet.
