LANSING, Mich., Dec. 11, 2024 — State Rep. Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor) issued the following statement after the Senate voted to pass House Bills 4062–4063, which protect renters from discrimination based on their source of income:
“We have seen people across our state denied safe, affordable housing based on their source of income for far too long. Every Michigander should have the dignity of putting a roof over their head, no matter where they get their income. By providing renters protections from discrimination and tools to seek relief, we’re leveling the playing field for hard-working Michiganders, seniors and veterans to ensure they aren’t unfairly shut out of housing opportunities.”
HB 4062-4063 and SB 205–207 are part of a broad five-bill package introduced by Morgan and state Rep. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor Charter Township), and state Sens. Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford Township), Rosemary Bayer (D-West Bloomfield) and Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor), respectively. The package prevents landlords from denying housing based on lawful sources of income, including Social Security, alimony or housing assistance programs like Housing Choice Vouchers. In addition, it makes modifications to the Landlord-Tenant Act that would allow a person impacted by a landlord’s income discrimination to seek relief or damages in court.
