LANSING, Mich., April 14, 2025 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer shared remarks at the Detroit Economic Club today. After her speech, state Rep. Jason Morgan (D-Ann Arbor) issued the following statement in support of her call for a sustainable, long-term plan to fix Michigan’s roads:

“For decades, Michigan has struggled to find a real solution to our road funding crisis. We’ve all seen what happens when short-term patches replace long-term solutions — our roads crumble, and the cost for Michiganders only gets higher.

“This is about lowering costs for families — residents are paying on average $758 per year on extra car repairs due to poor roads. In many cities, the cost exceeds $1,000 per year because we’ve failed to invest in our local roads. It’s unacceptable and our people cannot afford these unexpected costs. Car damage disrupts their lives and puts their safety at risk.

“The Governor is right: we have a real opportunity right now to work together to deliver a generational investment in our communities. Our roads are essential to our economy, public safety and the quality of life of everyone in our state. I’m excited to continue working with her and my colleagues in the Legislature to finally deliver a comprehensive, sustainable and responsible road funding plan that puts Michigan’s infrastructure on solid ground. It’s time to get it done.”
