LANSING, Mich., April 27, 2023 — State Rep. Christine Morse (D-Texas Township) introduced House Resolution 89 today. The resolution declares April 2023 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the state of Michigan, calling attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts women, children and men of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds.

“Sexual assault is an intolerable violent crime that has public health implications for all Michigan residents,” Morse said. “It’s essential to raise awareness around this form of violence as a way to create safer environments and to support survivors.”

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is a time to draw attention to the prevalence of sexual assault and educate individuals and communities about how to prevent it. The theme of SAAM this year is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” The campaign calls on all individuals, communities, organizations and institutions to change ourselves and the systems surrounding us to build racial equity and respect.
