LANSING, Mich., May 2, 2022 — According to a report, the U.S. Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, effectively ending a nationwide right to an abortion. In Michigan, a 1931 law criminalizes performing an abortion except to save the life of the pregnant person. State Rep. Christine Morse (D-Texas Township) issued the following statement:
“I am absolutely devastated by this news. I once had to make the choice between continuing with a wanted pregnancy and treating the cancer that was threatening my life. Under current Michigan law, which hasn’t been enforced since Roe v. Wade was decided nearly 50 years ago, my doctor could have gone to prison. That is totally unconscionable. I will fight with everything I have to ensure that other women have the right to choose what health options are right for them.”
