DETROIT, Mich., July 3, 2025 — July 1 marked the deadline for the Michigan Legislature to pass a balanced budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year. House Republicans failed to fulfill their responsibility, stalling negotiations and delaying critical investments for Michigan families. Meanwhile, Congress passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” today, which will slash more than $1 trillion from Medicaid, devastating federal support for healthcare and other vital services.
In response to the missed state deadline and harmful federal actions, state Rep. Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“I am fighting for a state budget that meets people’s needs and maintains a social safety net for Detroiters and all Michiganders, especially in light of the devastating federal cuts passed by the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans today. I will fight to protect access to healthcare, adequately fund K-12 schools and our great Michigan colleges, and expand truly affordable housing opportunities.
“The entire state budget, not bits and pieces, should have been completed by July 1, 2025. I, along with a united front of House Democrats, acted responsibly and humanely; we did not vote for a budget that cut education services for our kids and lacked care for the well-being of Michigan’s citizens. Democrats remain committed to negotiating in good faith for a budget that prioritizes improving the quality of life for all Michiganders, especially families and seniors. Let’s get this budget done.”
