State Rep. Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit) ceremoniously swears into the 103rd Legislature in the Michigan State Capitol Building on Jan. 8, 2025, in Lansing.

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 9, 2025 — The Michigan House of Representatives met for the first session of the 103rd Legislature yesterday, marking the first day in office for four new Democratic members. As House Democrats took to the floor unified in their goal to continue building up Michigan’s communities, State Rep. Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit) attended her first session as a State Representative.

After over 20 years of community advocacy and legal experience, her priorities for the term include strengthening the social safety net, creating affordable housing and increasing access to justice for all Michiganders. In response to the first session of the year, Myers Phillips issued the following statement:

“This has been a promising first day — it is clear that my Democratic colleagues and I are gearing up to get work done for the people of Michigan. Looking ahead, I’m excited to uplift Detroiters and all the communities in my district, eliminate systemic barriers to justice, provide economic prosperity for working families and help build a Michigan that works for the people. Today marks the continuation of the relationships between myself and the grassroots leaders that I’ve long advocated with. I’m ready to fight for the policies that build people up.”
