LANSING, Mich., Sept. 26, 2024 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed House Bill 5394 yesterday, which simplifies Michiganders’ ability to choose organ donation. State Rep. Cynthia Neeley (D-Flint) introduced the bill, which is in addition to the initial implementation of the Check Your Heart Act. More specifically, this legislation ensures that when an individual opts in to the donor registry on their state income tax returns, but forgets to include their driver’s license or state I.D. card number, the Secretary of State will have the ability to provide it directly to the organ donor procurement organization. After its passage, Neeley issued the following statement:
“This bill is about making organ donation more available and ensuring those that make it happen have the ability to do it right. I myself am a live organ donor, and I know how important it is to expand our registry — saving Michigander lives. Each contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of up to 75 People.”
