New jobs and bolstering Saginaw area economy

LANSING, Mich., Jan. 14, 2025 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced last week that the Biden-Harris administration chose Saginaw County manufacturer Hemlock Semiconductor to receive $325 million in investments. These funds will be used to build a new facility supporting 180 permanent, advanced manufacturing jobs and over a thousand construction jobs.

“This announcement is a welcomed one — not only will these investments bring good-paying jobs to the U.S. but they’ll bring the jobs home to Saginaw County,” said state Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw). “The new facility will increase Hemlock’s production capacity and will help continue to support the semiconductor supply chain.”

Hemlock Semiconductor is the only hyper-pure polysilicon manufacturer headquartered in the U.S. This material is critical for the creation of electronics and solar panels.

“This is one of the biggest investments from the CHIP and Science Act in Michigan and it is right in our backyard,” said O’Neal. “I applaud this new opportunity. In this technologically changing world, Hemlock Semiconductor  is and continues to be a key part of America’s advancement.”

The Biden-Harris administration’s CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 works to uplift domestic manufacturing and support job creation. Michigan has received nearly $1.5 billion in investments for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, including those in this recent announcement.
