EAST LANSING, Mich., Sept. 27, 2024 — State Rep. Amos O’Neal (D-Saginaw) attended and spoke at a forum today at the MSU Henry Center for Executive Development. The forum’s theme was “Beyond the Gordie Howe Bridge: Reimagining Trade and Commerce for a New Age.” The event highlighted the significance of the relationship between the United States and Canada with a unique focus on Michigan and Ontario. Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, Heather Grondin of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority and other leaders on both sides of the border spoke during the forum.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the forum and found it to be an invaluable opportunity to connect with many wonderful people from both Michigan and Canada. Healthy trade and positive relationships with Canada are essential to Michigan’s success,” O’Neal said. “The Gordie Howe International Bridge is crucial for enhancing trade and strengthening our vital U.S.-Canada relationship, paving the way for economic growth and collaboration between Michigan and Ontario.”
The Gordie Howe International Bridge broke ground in 2018 and is projected to be completed in 2025. This major infrastructure project has already generated thousands of jobs for residents in both the United States and Canada, providing a significant boost to local economies. Once completed, the bridge is expected to facilitate smoother cross-border travel and trade, helping to alleviate congestion at existing border crossings. By enhancing transportation efficiency, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will support economic growth in the region, enhance supply chains and improve the overall quality of life for both countries.
“Michigan and Canada share more than a border; we have a rich economic and cultural bond. Strengthening and sustaining this partnership is crucial for the prosperity of both regions,” said state Sen. Roger Victory (R-Hudsonville), who also attended the event.
