HARPER WOODS, Mich., Sept. 16, 2024 — State Rep. Veronica Paiz (D-Harper Woods) will attend the White House’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on Sept. 18.

“I’m excited to attend the White House ceremony during Hispanic Heritage Month,” Paiz said. “It is truly a great honor to usher in this important month, surrounded by fellow changemakers within the Latino community. This celebration highlights the profound impact Latinos have had on shaping the history and culture of the United States and I am humbled to be part of it.”

Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans to the social, economic and cultural fabric of the United States. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 and ending on Oct. 15.

Paiz, one of the few Latino representatives serving in the Michigan Legislature, emphasized the importance of amplifying Latino voices in government.

“As one of the few Latino representatives in the Michigan Legislature, I have a responsibility to provide the diverse perspective of the Hispanic and Latino communities in policy discussions,” Paiz stated. “From housing to health care access, Latinos play a critical role in shaping policy that affects all Michiganders, and I hope to continue representing my community with pride and to work toward a more inclusive and equitable future.”

Paiz’s attendance at the White House event underscores her commitment to elevating the stories and achievements of Latino Americans in Michigan and across the country. Hispanic Heritage Month not only celebrates the past but also focuses on the future contributions of the Latino community. Paiz’s role as a representative ensures that Latino perspectives remain a central part of policymaking in the state legislature.

“I look forward to connecting with fellow leaders and changemakers at this event as we work together to strengthen the voices of the Latino community across the nation,” Paiz concluded.
