LANSING, Mich., Aug. 17, 2022 — Members of the House Democratic Caucus held a press conference today to denounce the lack of legislative session, while Michiganders are paying the salaries of their representatives to tackle the issues affecting them. From high prices on gas and groceries to the threat of reproductive health care being taken away, Democrats have legislation ready to move, but Lansing Republicans who set the calendar won’t return to work from their summer vacation. After the event, state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia), sponsor of House Bill 5542, which would create the Reproductive Health Act, issued the following statement:

“Millions of Michiganders wait in limbo as the Michigan Supreme Court considers repealing the 1931 abortion ban in our state’s constitution, but it doesn’t need to be that way. The Legislature could act today to secure reproductive rights; however, this extended summer vacation initiated by Republican leadership has made it impossible for Democrats to get any work done. We need our Republican colleagues to join us in Lansing and uphold the will of the overwhelming majority of the people we were elected to serve. We must act immediately and pass the Reproductive Health Act to protect every person’s right to bodily autonomy.”
