DEARBORN — House Democrats unveiled a plan today to expand air quality protections across the state and make communities safer for everyday Michiganders. The legislation would firmly establish air quality criteria at the state level and expand emissions permitting requirements, while increasing accountability and transparency between polluters and the communities in which they operate. In response, state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia) issued the following statement:
“Too often, we forget how lucky we are to enjoy the natural beauty of the state around us. But this great gift also comes with the responsibility to preserve our precious resources for the generations that follow. In order to do that we need to be mitigating the threats posed by corporate air pollution in a variety of ways, and that’s why my bill focuses on options like planting trees and other vegetation to negate any increase in emissions. If we want to still call ourselves ‘Pure Michigan’ we must continue to earn it, and I can think of no better way of doing so than by working to hold bad actors accountable and ensure there is clean, breathable air for all.”
