LANSING, Mich., April 21, 2023 — President Biden today announced his appointments to the Presidential Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans. Speaker Joe Tate (D-Detroit) has been included as a member of the Commission, which aids in developing, implementing and coordinating educational programs and initiatives for agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education. Specifically, the Commission provides advice to the president through the Secretary of Education on matters pertaining to educational equity and economic opportunity for Black communities. Upon hearing the announcement, Speaker Tate released the following statement:

 

“I want to extend my most sincere gratitude to President Biden for appointing me as a member of the Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans. It is a genuine honor to join other legislators and leaders from across the country with the shared goal of promoting education, career pathways and economic opportunities for Black Americans. In my work on this commission, I will bring with me my passion for fostering equity for all people and my commitment to ensuring students have access to a superior education. I also look forward to learning from fellow commission members and incorporating the experience into my work here in Michigan.”
