LANSING, Mich., July 30, 2025 — A federal court ruled Monday that Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide must continue to be reimbursed by Medicaid funding following Republican efforts to defund the organization. Planned Parenthood has long been the target of Republican attacks, and the organization has underscored that it is at risk of closing nearly 200 clinics if they lose Medicaid funding. The Medicaid program itself is also currently under attack with the passage of the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which cuts the program by $1 trillion dollars, putting health care for millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Michiganders at risk. State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky (D-Livonia), chair of the Progressive Women’s Caucus, released the following statement after the ruling:
“Planned Parenthood provides thousands with necessary reproductive care and family planning services. The Trump administration’s move to withhold Medicaid funding puts necessary health care at risk. I am glad that the courts have thus far upheld this funding, but I am nonetheless concerned about future cuts to both Planned Parenthood and Medicaid. We must remain diligent.
“The so-called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ cuts $1 trillion dollars from Medicaid, which will kick millions off their coverage. The last thing people need is more cuts to their health care. Planned Parenthood health centers are necessary for many across our state, and it is absolutely essential that patients who use Medicaid still have access to contraception, STI and cancer screenings and all the reproductive care they need and deserve.”
