LANSING, Mich., July 12, 2023 — The Iowa Legislature passed a six-week abortion ban last night, making it one of the most restrictive states in the nation for reproductive freedom. Michigan’s Progressive Women’s Caucus issued the following statement in response:
“Anti-abortion extremists continue to strip away Americans’ right to make personal medical decisions. A ban on abortion at six weeks’ gestation — before most people even know they’re pregnant — means they cannot make the best decision for themselves about their pregnancy and their bodies.
“Here in Michigan, we are continuing the momentum from last fall, when voters overwhelmingly supported enshrining reproductive freedom in the state constitution. We repealed the outdated 1931 criminal abortion ban, and more legislation is in the works. We won’t stop fighting to make Michigan a safe haven for people to have the freedom to choose the reproductive health care that is right for them.”
