As the looming July 1 budget deadline nears, Democrats raise red flags that Republican numbers don’t add up

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich., May 29, 2025 — Statement from House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton) on Speaker Hall’s refusal to pass a timely budget:

“Matt Hall’s remarks yesterday made crystal clear what he has been saying since the start of his tenure as speaker: he does not care what happens to everyday Michiganders. By declaring more than a month before the July 1 deadline that he refuses to come to the negotiating table and pass a final budget, Hall is demonstrating how out of touch he and the House Republicans are with the needs and concerns of the people in this state. Teachers, state troopers, librarians and healthcare workers aren’t tuning in for the ‘Matt Hall Show.’ They don’t care whether Hall wins political points in the Lansing bubble by sticking it to the Democrats and neglecting his duty to pass a reasonable budget — they just care if they’re going to get their paycheck and can pay their bills on time. It’s time for Hall to get off stage, stop performing for the cameras, and accept that real government service requires compromise. Michiganders deserve leadership, not political theater. It’s time for House Republicans to work toward a budget that funds the services and opportunities Michiganders need to thrive.”
