CANTON, Mich., July 25, 2025 — Michigan House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton) has issued a statement:

“In divided government, like most other facets of life, compromise is necessary to get any significant work done. Whether you’re talking about a business deal or a relationship, both parties must be willing to work together in good faith for a shared goal, even if there are disagreements along the way about how best to achieve it. Matt Hall’s behavior as leader of the House Republicans has demonstrated over the past several months that he does not share any goals — including reaching a budget deal — with House Democrats and, in some cases, members of his own party.

“Schools are sending out pink slips. We are staring down the barrel of a $677 million hole in our state budget starting this October because of the OBBB. And families, local governments, and public safety organizations are all facing total uncertainty about how they are going to pay for doctor visits, city employees, or first responders. We have to act now. Yet instead of making any meaningful progress yesterday, Matt Hall led one of the most disastrous days in the Legislature’s history, holding his colleagues hostage for seven hours without getting a single bill passed. Despite insults toward his own caucus and attempts to divide ours, House Democrats stood united yesterday ready to work on a budget, and we know that we have colleagues on the other side of the aisle who are ready to do the same. We’re hopeful their voices will win the day next time.”
