CANTON, Mich., June 14, 2025 — Michigan House Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton) has issued a statement on the attacks on elected Democrats in Minnesota:
“Days like today solidify how far our country has fallen, how deep the cracks between those with differing ideologies have truly developed. It is difficult to know where to begin, which aspect of these attacks is most horrific: targeting local elected officials, at their homes, in the middle of the night; targeting their families as well; impersonating law enforcement to gain their trust; or doing all of this because the attacker wanted to punish them — and through fear, everyone else like them — for their political affiliation. In order to begin bridging this gulf, those at every point on the political spectrum must recognize this did not happen in a vacuum. Our country has been slowly marching toward cultural and political polarization, with increasingly hateful rhetoric, and it is becoming easier — and more acceptable — to view those who disagree with you as inhuman. Now we are seeing the cost of that inhumanity. My heart goes out to the children of Speaker Hortman and her husband, and we are all awaiting news of Sen. Hoffman and his wife. Whatever happens next, my caucus and I will continue, not without fear, but in spite of it, to advocate for the changes we know are critical to establishing a better, safer, state and world. Even for the people who disagree with us.”
