Recommendation continues the institution’s tradition
LANSING, Mich., Jan. 14, 2025 — Democratic Leader Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton) delivered his caucus’ recommended committee assignments to Republican leadership today.
“It is a long-standing tradition for minority leadership to weigh in on their caucus’ committee assignments. These recommendations are an important part of the legislative tradition — it is fundamental to uphold the customs of our system, in order to provide confidence in our democracy and ensure transparency in the process. Through a committee on committees — which was independent from myself and chaired by Rep. Jasper R. Martus (D-Flushing) — our caucus members shared which committees they felt best suited for, and it is from that process that we have made our recommendations. It is, of course, important that members have an opportunity to weigh in so that we align their skills and experience with assignments, so that the committee process is most effective for the people of Michigan.”
According to the House website committees are organized according to subject matter.
“I am hopeful for committee assignments that reflect representatives’ expertise on the matters that will come before each committee,” Puri continued. “Our caucus is diverse and we bring with us a great wealth of experience in many areas, and we come from many backgrounds — from former social workers, lawyers, parents, teachers, hair stylists — we are here to represent the people, all people. With my recommendations today, we aim to continue representing and serving Michigan’s diverse population by bringing our skills and commitment to the committee process.“
