LANSING — State Rep. Isaac Robinson (D-Detroit) announced the Realistic Equitable Auto Insurance Legislation (R.E.A.L.) Deal Auto Insurance Caucus during a press conference on Monday. The focus of this group of legislators is to address the failings of recent auto insurance plans currently outlined in House Bill 4397 and Senate Bill 1. The R.E.A.L. Deal Caucus is working on legislation to reduce auto insurance rates by eliminating the use of non-driving factors in rate setting and protecting health care, instead of slashing benefits.
“We need to address the reasons our auto insurance is so high: discriminatory rate setting practices and non-existent oversight. The plans presented by my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will do nothing for the drivers in my district but diminish their coverage and increase their risk,” said Robinson. “Insurance companies here in Michigan are among the least regulated in the country and it’s time for that to change. Ensuring transparency and accountability for insurance companies, while eliminating the use of discriminatory non-driving factors in rate setting are important steps to bringing actual relief to the people of Michigan”
Joining Rep. Robinson in the R.E.A.L. Deal Auto Insurance Caucus are John Cherry (D-Flint), Kevin Coleman (D-Westland), Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac), Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit), Jewel Jones (D-Inkster), Rachel Hood (D-Grand Rapids) and Jim Haadsma (D-Battle Creek).
