Trenton, Mich., June 24, 2022 — In response to the Supreme Court of the United States 6-3 decision to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights case and 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey, Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton) issued the following statement:
“Today, the Supreme Court took away a constitutional right to reproductive freedom and healthcare for millions of Americans. This clearly political court has dismantled the nearly 50-year legal precedent for women to have control over their own bodies – and we know that this will not end abortions, only safe abortions. It’s an infuriating and devastating day for our country and our right to privacy.
This radical decision has paved the way for politics to control healthcare decisions in the United States. By removing the ability for women to determine their own medical care, the court has moved these decisions out of doctor’s offices and into State Capitols. Our work to protect safe and legal abortion access is now more important than ever, and I will do everything I can to protect these rights in Michigan.”
