State Representative Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) proposed House Bill 5542 last week, legislation to regulate out-of-state travel and the conducting of business by employees of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).

“One of the most important aspects of my job as a legislator is to ensure Michigan tax dollars are spent wisely,” said Dianda. “This bill would save taxpayer dollars by regulating MDOT travel expenses and taking advantage of the newest available technology.”

More specifically, the bill states that MDOT employees shall not use state-owned aircraft to travel for personal or official state business and shall use video conferencing to conduct business within the department, with other state agencies, and/or work contractors, whenever practicable.

“Simply put, this bill will decrease unnecessary state spending and save taxpayers money,” Dianda said. “I know how hard Michiganders work, and I will continue to do everything I can to ensure their precious tax dollars are spent wisely.”
