LANSING — Despite Gov. Rick Snyder’s assurances to the contrary in tonight’s State of the State address, middle-class families have struggled under five years of leadership from Gov. Rick Snyder and the Republican-led Legislature, Rep. Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) said Tuesday night. Rather than doubling down on Gov. Snyder’s failed agenda, Rep. Greig said it’s time to invest in a Michigan that works for school kids, college students, families, seniors and small-business owners who are being left behind by the Republican agenda.

“While big corporations have benefited from massive tax breaks, middle-class families and young people are still struggling to do more than simply survive from paycheck to paycheck,” Rep. Greig said. “We need a state economy that works for everyone, so that all hardworking Michiganders can enjoy a share of the recovery.”

Rep. Greig, who attended the State of the State address with special guest, Farmington City Councilwoman Sara Bowman, said Michiganders are struggling because of the decisions and priorities of Gov. Snyder and the Republican Legislature.

“From schools that struggle to find the resources to provide a world-class education to the poisoning of a city’s water supply, we see where Republican priorities have led our state,” Rep. Greig said. “The time to change course is now. Rather than continuing a legislative agenda that prioritizes big corporations over working families, communities and small businesses, legislators need to prioritize investment in infrastructure, education and community health services.

“Michiganders have a right to expect more,” Rep. Greig said. “When families can do more than just make ends meet, when students graduate with an excellent education but not a mountain of debt, and when communities can grow and thrive, our whole state succeeds.”
