LANSING – State Representative Marilyn Lane (Fraser) applauded the signing into law of Senate Bills 414, 415 and 981 today, requiring autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) coverage from insurance carriers.
“I am so honored and privileged to be asked by our governor to be here. I am proud to champion this critical legislation and be the voice for our Michigan families living with autism,” stated Lane.
Under the proposal, insurance companies regulated by the state will have to cover expenses for ASD therapy and diagnosis:

of up to $50,000 a year for kids younger than 7,

$40,000 a year for kids ages 7-13,
-
and $30,000 for kids up to age 18.
Hearing from leaders and friends throughout the community, Lane championed this issue as a committee member as the legislation worked through the House Committee on Families, Children and Seniors. Praising the bills as “much-needed,” she also voiced the important need to include coverage for mental health parity.
An advocate of autism awareness, Lane also joined with Lt. Gov. Brian Calley and other legislators as the Mackinac Bridge was illuminated blue in an effort to raise autism awareness at St. Ignace earlier in the month.
“I have heard from so many of our friends and neighbors in my community who struggle with the financial burdens that they face when they’re presented with these challenges,” Lane continued, “Although I am disappointed to see the lack of comprehensive coverage included in this package, I am confident that this is a firm first step towards getting our families the help they deserve.”
