Legislative Update

Keeping Asian Carp out of our Great Lakes

Last month, my colleagues in the Great Lakes Legislative Caucus (GLLC) and I sent a letter to President Trump urging him to release the Tentatively Selected Plan by the Army Corps of Engineers to prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. You can read our letter here:

http://www.csgmidwest.org/GLLC/documents/2017_GLLC_GLMRIS_final.pdf

I’m pleased that after we sent this letter in July, the report was released in early August. You can read more about the recommended measures in the report here: http://glmris.anl.gov/brandon-rd/

This is certainly a step in the right direction. I look forward to continuing to push for more appropriate protections to ensure that Asian carp, and other invasive species, do not threaten our Great Lakes, and with them our economy, environment and quality of life.

Making Prescription Drugs More Affordable

This week, my colleagues and I introduced a plan to better protect Michiganders from huge jumps in prescription drug costs. If you or a loved one take prescription medicines, you may have noticed your prices going up. Maybe it’s even become difficult to afford all the medicine you need.

Our plan would establish a Prescription Drug Consumer Protection Board, and drug companies would be required to notify the Board 60 days before a price increase of 10 percent in one year or 30 percent over five years. Our plan would also strengthen the Michigan Consumer Protection Act by requiring the board to request an investigation by the attorney general’s office of any drug manufacturer that is suspected of having grossly spiked their prices for Michiganders.

Outdoor Recreation in our Community

You don’t have to travel far at all to have some outdoor fun over the long Labor Day weekend.

Washtenaw County has some great biking trails. Independence Lake Park and Sharon Mills Park offer just some of the many trails you can bike. Learn more about those and others nearby here:
