LANSING — The Michigan House of Representatives passed a House Resolution introduced by Democratic Whip Jeremy Moss (D-Southfield) forming a Legislators Compact, based on the recent Mayors Compact, denouncing hatred and bigotry. A companion resolution, introduced by state Sen. Margaret O’Brien (R-Kalamazoo) passed the state Senate last week.
“With the increasing visibility of hate groups across the country, it’s important now more than ever that we stand together, regardless of party, to reject this repugnant vitriol,” said Rep. Moss. “The Legislature has an opportunity to say in a clear voice that we unequivocally denounce the recent biased-motivated violence and every other form of bigotry. There truly is more that unites than divides us — it’s time we begin focusing on that with this Compact.”
Following the clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia fueled by violent white nationalists last month, the Anti-Defamation League and the United States Conference of Mayors launched a new initiative — titled the Mayors Compact — to fight extremism and bigotry, calling on mayors across the nation to sign a compact vowing to make cities safer and to promote the fundamental principles of justice and equality. The Moss resolution would create a similar compact among legislators in the state.
“Michigan must be welcoming to all and celebrate the diversity in our great state,” said Rep. Moss. “I encourage all of my colleagues to reject the political rhetoric that encourages division and fear because we all need to be on the same side in the fight against hate and domestic terrorism.”
