LANSING, Mich., Jan. 26, 2023 — The Michigan House passed House Bill 4001 to repeal the retirement tax today. The retirement tax diminishes the annual income of 500,000 Michigan households by an average of $1,000 per year. State Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Township) introduced the bill previously in 2019 and 2021, but it never received a hearing in committee. She issued the following statement on the bill’s passage:

“My very first act as state representative after I was sworn in this term was to reintroduce my bill to repeal the retirement tax. This bill will help our valuable community members — mothers, fathers, grandparents — put food on the table, purchase much-needed prescriptions and fill up their tanks. I have fought for a long time to get this bill across the finish line and give older Michiganders the support they need and deserve. Today, we’re one step closer toward achieving that goal.”
