DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 17, 2023 — Instability and loss of life persists in Gaza, and reports from the region are disturbing and heartbreaking. In response to the continued violence, state Rep. Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn) issued the following statement:

“Right now, a couple from Dearborn is trapped in Gaza. The Alarayashis are American citizens. I am outraged by the lack of empathy toward innocent Arabs in danger. The glaring indifference the Biden administration has shown to the suffering of my people only guarantees more innocent lives will be lost in Gaza. The United States has been able to secure safe passage for American Israelis in the region, and the same must be done for Palestinian Americans.

“We need to bring them back, no excuses. The Alarayashi family deserves the full protection of the U.S. government, and I’m demanding answers from the State Department about their situation and will not stop until we are successful in bringing the Alarayashi family home.

“The U.S. must immediately intervene for peace in the region and aggressively push the Israeli government to reinstate electricity, water and crucial humanitarian aid to Palestine. I will be working daily to use my office and every resource I have to demand action.”

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our fellow American citizens currently trapped in Gaza, emphasizing the pressing nature of this distressing situation… Every American life holds immense value, and we are wholeheartedly committed to ensuring their well-being,” said Mariam Charara, executive director of the Arab American Civil Rights League.
