LANSING, Mich., Jan. 29, 2025 — House Democrats held a press conference today to take a stand against Republican initiatives at the state and federal levels that disrupt governance and hurt Michigan workers and families. Following the press conference, state Rep. Carrie Rheingans (D-Ann Arbor) issued the following statement:
“It appears that the new Republican platform is to ignore and defy both the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of Michigan. This is especially concerning given that over 40% of Michigan’s state budget comes from federal funding, impacting residents in every district across the state.
“At the national level, President Trump is openly disregarding the Constitution, pushing for the executive branch to assume duties that rightfully belong to the legislative branch — specifically, the power to appropriate funds. A similar disregard for separation of powers is playing out in Michigan, where House Republicans are deliberately withholding bills that have already passed both chambers, preventing them from being presented to the governor.
“This Republican culture of chaos, from D.C. to Lansing, shows they just want media attention; they do not want to solve actual problems. I urge my constituents and all Michiganders to keep an eye on what Republicans do and to not get distracted by their empty words.”
